“Interaction – and possibilities?” The significances of participation and identity in patient organization for persons with multiple sclerosis

Background and purpose: A central part of community work is contributing to processes that create opportunities for change and opportunities for participation on a collective level. The concern of this study has been to increase knowledge about the importance of participation and identity in patient organizations for persons with multiple sclerosis (MS). Voluntary organizations, such as the patient’s organization, are important arena for participation in the Norwegian society. The patient’s organization MS – the association is a voluntary, ideal political, special interest organization under the umbrella organization of the Norwegian Federation of Organizations of Disabled People (FFO). Persons with the chronic disease multiple sclerosis (MS), who have chosen to join the MS-association have also chosen to participate in a collective. What it means for them to participate on such an arena is what the study enlightens. Method: This thesis is qualitatively designed within a sociological and hermeneutical research tradition. I have carried out two conversations with focus groups made up from persons with MS who are active members of the association. The method is in line with the ideology behind community work as it gives the participants opportunities for interaction as well as giving the research a voice. Findings: The participants in this study experience a sense of belonging, community and change in their life conditions as members of the MS-association. This may be a process all the way from having a chronic disease to the voluntary choice of taking on the identity as a participant in the organization. They are seen and heard within the organization. The MS-association is an arena and a structure for interaction. It encourages participation by creating identities and a sense of belonging, which leads to a sense of community. Ideas, and the opportunities for contributions from the bottom, influence the top of the organization at the same time as organization from the top may inspire the participants from below. It is a demand of knowledge about participation in disability research, for what this study can be a contribution.


”Samhandling – og muligheter?” Betydning av deltakelse og identitet i pasientorganisasjonen for personer med multippel sklerose

Bakgrunn og formål: Sentralt i samfunnsarbeid er det å bidra til prosesser som skaper muligheter for endring og rom for deltakelse på kollektivt nivå. Formålet med studien har vært å få mer kunnskap om betydning av deltakelse og identitet i pasientorganisasjonen for personer med multippel sklerose (MS). Frivillige organisasjoner er en viktig arena for deltakelse i det norske samfunn. Pasientorganisasjonen MS-forbundet er en frivillig idealpolitisk interesseorganisasjon organisert under paraplyorganisasjonen funksjonshemmedes fellesorganisasjon (FFO). Personer med den kroniske sykdommen multippel sklerose (MS) som har valgt å melde seg inn i forbundet har også valgt å delta i et kollektiv. Studien belyser hva det kan bety for dem å delta på en slik arena. Metode: Studien har en kvalitativ design i en sosiologisk tenkning innen hermeneutisk forskningstradisjon. Det er gjennomført to fokusgruppesamtaler med personer med MS som er aktive medlemmer i forbundet. Metoden er i tråd med ideologien i samfunnsarbeid da den gir deltakerne mulighet for samhandling. Funn: Personene i denne studien opplever tilhørighet, fellesskap og endring av levekår som medlemmer i MS-forbundet. Det kan være en prosess fra opplevelsen å bli syk og frem til det valget om å frivillig ta på seg identiteten som deltaker i organisasjonen. De blir sett og hørt i organisasjonen. MS-forbundet er arena og struktur for samhandling og gir rom for deltakelse og identitetsskaping som igjen gir fellesskapstenking. Ideer og muligheter for medvirkning nedenfra påvirker organisasjonen oppover, samtidig som ovenfra styrt organisering kan inspirere deltakerne nedenfra. Det etterspørres kunnskap om deltakelse i forskning om funksjonshemning. Dette kan være et viktig bidrag.
